Eyelid surgery work

Procedure text on the oculoplastics page describes the practice's service, co-led by Dr. Fay and Dr. Neerukonda, rather than Dr. Fay individually.

• Upper and lower blepharoplasty. Removes excess upper-eyelid skin and lower-eyelid fat/skin; incisions hidden in the natural upper-lid crease or along the lower lash line; outpatient, local anesthesia with optional sedation (oculoplastics-west-springfield).
• Ptosis repair. Tightens or repositions the muscle that lifts the upper eyelid; the page states it "is often considered a functional (medical) procedure when it interferes with vision," in which case it may be covered by insurance, versus cosmetic when done mainly for appearance (same page).
• Brow lift. Preferred method is an endoscopic brow lift using three to five small hairline incisions; a traditional longer hairline incision is used for more severe cases (same page).
• Entropion repair. A small section of eyelid is removed to tighten an inward-turning lid (same page).
• Ectropion repair. Involves stretching scar tissue or similar tightening techniques for an outward-turning lid (same page).

Insurance and cost

Ptosis repair "is often considered a functional (medical) procedure when it interferes with vision. In these cases, it may be covered by insurance" (oculoplastics-west-springfield). The practice's insurance page lists acceptance of Medicare (Traditional), Medicare Advantage plans (Aetna, Anthem/BCBS, Fallon, Health New England, UnitedHealthcare and others) and a long list of commercial payers; some plans apply to ophthalmologists only, not optometrists (insurances-accepted). No procedure prices are published.

Recovery

• Swelling/bruising. Blepharoplasty: mild swelling, bruising and tenderness for the first week to 10 days (oculoplastics-west-springfield).
• Final result. Blepharoplasty results become apparent once swelling subsides, typically within several weeks to months (same page).
• Back to work. Brow lift: most patients return to work within 10 days (same page).
• Bruising. Brow lift swelling and bruising typically resolve within a week to 10 days (same page).
• Final result. Brow lift results last a decade or more (same page).
• Recovery time. Entropion/ectropion repair: eye patch for 24 hours, healing over about two weeks (same page).
