Eyelid surgery work

• Upper blepharoplasty. Recontours the eyelid by removing excess tissue; performed for cosmetic reasons or, when excess skin blocks vision, for reconstructive/functional reasons (upper-eyelid-blepharoplasty).
• Lower blepharoplasty. A transconjunctival incision on the inside of the eyelid removes protruding orbital fat; excess skin and muscle removed from beneath the lashes; the lower lid can be tightened at the same time to prevent post-operative retraction. The site calls transconjunctival lower blepharoplasty "the state-of-the-art technique," replacing the older transcutaneous approach (lower-eyelid-blepharoplasty).
• Ptosis repair. Acquired ptosis is repaired by fixing the broken eyelid tendon; congenital ptosis is repaired by resecting (shortening) the levator muscle to strengthen it (ptosis).
• Brow lift (brow ptosis). A cosmetic browlift can be combined with upper blepharoplasty; an adjacent browlift (incision above the eyebrows) is reserved mainly for men with thicker skin, leaving a scar that fades over months; a coronal browlift (incision behind the hairline) removes an ellipse of scalp tissue and leaves a hidden scar, often preferred by women (brow-ptosis).
• Entropion repair. Described as "a highly successful outpatient procedure" for an inward-rotated eyelid margin (entropion).
• Ectropion repair. Tightens or shortens stretched eyelid tendons to restore normal eyelid tone (ectropion).

Brow ptosis surgery "is generally considered a covered expense if vision is affected" (brow-ptosis). The affiliated group practice page states insurance typically covers bilateral upper eyelid/lash ptosis repair when vision is affected, and the group accepts Medicare, Medicaid/Patient 1st, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Alabama, Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, Tricare Standard and Viva, among others (aoapc.com/procedures-eyelid-surgery, aoapc.com/insurance). No procedure prices are published.

Recovery

Eyelid swelling and bruising may each be present for 1-2 weeks after surgery; expected post-operative symptoms include eyelid asymmetry, small amounts of blood-tinged tears, blurred vision, moderate pain, itching and tearing (what-to-expect).
